What is period delay treatment?

Period delay treatment allows you to postpone your period for up to 17 days. This can serve two purposes, one of them being postponing the bleeding. This can be done for many reasons, the most common being having plans which can be impacted by the symptoms of a period, like pain, discomfort and cravings.

Delaying your period has another huge benefit. It can help you manage heavy bleeding and make menstrual cramps less painful. So all around, period delay treatment can make your life much easier and even healthier.[1]

Who should take period delay tablets?

Period delay tablets are for all women who want to postpone their period a while longer. This can be because you might be going on holiday, you might be going on a date, or you simply have a stressful week ahead and you don’t wanna be dealing with pads and tampons. So delaying your period will eliminate the problem temporarily.

Is it safe to delay your period?

For the most part, yes. It’s completely safe to delay your period. But you shouldn’t rely on it and use it regularly, so try to opt for it only when necessary.

Although period delay treatment is safe for almost everyone, there are a few exceptions:

  • You shouldn’t use it if you’re pregnant or if you think you might be pregnant.
  • If you have or have had in the past, vaginal bleeding that wasn’t your period and it wasn’t monitored by a clinician.
  • If you have genital or breast cancer. Or if you have a history of breast or vaginal cancer, or if you suspect you could have it.
  • It’s not suitable for women who have had liver tumors.
  • If you have a history of jaundice during pregnancy.
  • If you have a serious vascular condition.
  • If you’ve had a stroke caused by a blood clot.

How does period delay treatment work?

Period delay treatment essentially keeps the amount of progesterone in your body elevated. It accomplishes this by mimicking the natural progesterone already present in your body. This high level of progesterone can stop your uterus lining from breaking down,[1]delaying your period.

How should I take period delay tablets?

Period delay treatment tablets have a few different uses, and the way you take them will depend on your final goal. But for period delay specifically, you’ll normally take three tablets per day, three days before your period is due. Your period will usually start within three days of finishing your treatment course.

How effective are period delay tablets?

Period delay tablets are considered to be effective when it comes to delaying your period while maintaining fertility.

This method of period delay treatment is proven to be more effective than combined contraceptive pills, which are often used to help delay periods. During a study to test this, only 8% of women who used period delay tablets reported spotting, while in the group who took combined contraceptive pills, 43% of women reported spotting.[2]

Period Delay

What medications are there for period delay?

There are a few different period delay treatment tablets such as Norethisterone, which is also sold as Utovlan or Primolut N.[1]If your BMI is 25 or above, or if you’re a smoker, you can get Provera instead of Norethisterone.

Provera is prescribed off-label for period delay, but that doesn’t mean that the medication is unsafe in any way. Clinicians and experts have found it to be suitable and effective for period delay purposes. It’s prescribed off-label simply because the manufacturer hasn’t extended the license for use in period delay.

Provera and Utovlan both work in the same way in your body to delay your period, and they’re both made by Pfizer, but they’re slightly different from each other. They both contain different types of progesterone: Provera’s got medroxyprogesterone acetate in it, whilst Utovlan contains norethisterone.

If your BMI is below 25 and you’re not a smoker, you’re likely to be given Utovlan initially. But if you end up showing sensitivity to it and it triggers unpleasant side effects, you will be given Provera as an alternative. And vice versa.

If you end up reacting negatively to both Provera and Utovlan, our clinician will discuss with you alternative methods of treatment that are safe for you to use. The availability of period delay medications might vary depending on which state you’re in, so we’ll advise you about all your options and help you choose the most suitable one.

Is there a ‘best’ treatment for period delay?

There isn’t a ‘best’ treatment as such. It depends on you and your body. If you’re more prone to side effects with certain types of progesterone, this will affect which period delay treatment tablets are recommended for you.

There’s also the possibility that you’re allergic to a certain ingredient in a specific treatment. If this is the case, our clinician can advise you on other treatments that are safe for you to take, and which don’t contain the ingredient you’re allergic or sensitive to.

Can you delay your period naturally?

There is no natural way to delay your period yet, but there are other ways besides taking period delay treatment tablets. For example, you can delay your period by taking two packets of the contraceptive pill back to back, skipping the usual break, or skipping the inactive pills you normally take if you’re using Every Day pills.

If you’re thinking of taking the pill continuously to delay your period, you should speak to our clinician first, to make sure that it is safe for you to do so. Since the pill isn’t prescribed for this purpose in the first place, it can cause some side effects like nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and vaginal bleeding.

Does period delay treatment always work?

Answer:
Yes. Period delay treatment tablets that contain norethisterone for example have proven to be more effective at delaying your period than combined contraceptive pills.[1]

Although period delay treatment works, how well it works will vary from person to person, [2] so always keep our clinician posted on how you’re feeling and how well the treatment is working for you, so they can help you if you need to try a different medication.

Can you get side effects from period delay treatment?

Answer:
Like with any other medication, you can get side effects from period delay treatment, but not everyone experiences them. 

Side effects can include wheezing, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, tongue, hand, and feet, feeling faint and a skin rash. If you experience any serious reaction to period delay treatment you should seek medical emergency assistance as soon as possible.

Can the morning-after pill delay your period?

Answer:
Yes, the morning after pill can delay your period. But it’s not as reliable as period delay treatment as it may delay your period for only a week or two, or in some cases, only up to a week.

The morning after pill may also cause your period to arrive earlier, and so not delay your period at all.

Are there different types of period delay treatment?

Answer:
There are different types of tablets available for period delay, but there aren’t any other forms of period delay treatment. When it comes to tablets, you get different brand and dosage choices, and our clinician will advise you on which is best for you.

Period delay treatment tablets that contain norethisterone like Utovlan are the most commonly prescribed, but there are a few conditions to using it. You can’t take it if you smoke or if your BMI is 25 or more. If norethisterone isn’t suitable for you, you can take Provera instead.
