What is Ketoconazole?
Ketoconazole is an antifungal used to treat ringworm. It’s applied to the affected areas once a day for two to four weeks.
Ringworm is a fungal skin infection characterised by ring-like patches that can be red, itchy, or scaly. It’s not a serious condition, but it’s highly contagious, so it’s important you’re promptly treated to avoid spreading the infection to others.
How does Ketoconazole work?
Ketoconazole works by stopping the production of ergosterol, an important component in the fungal cell wall. Without ergosterol, the fungus can’t function properly. This stops it from growing and causes it to expire.1
Does Ketoconazole cause side effects?
You might get mild side effects when using Ketoconazole, such as itching, redness, or a burning sensation on the treated area. These side effects shouldn’t last long or cause any serious health risk.
If you notice peeling or severe skin irritation, stop using the medicine right away. This could be a sign of an allergic reaction.
Is Ketoconazole available over-the-counter?
Ketoconazole is only available with a prescription from your doctor, so they can check it’s safe and suitable for you. They’ll monitor your condition throughout the treatment process to make sure the medicine is working for you.
What forms of Ketoconazole are there?
Ketoconazole comes in many different forms, such as cream, shampoo (for scalp ringworm), and tablets. We only have Ketoconazole 2% cream for ringworm. It’s typically applied twice a day for up to four weeks on the affected areas.
