What is Ciclopirox?

How does Ciclopirox work?
Ciclopirox works by binding to iron, which inhibits iron-dependent enzymes that fungi need to function. This leads to several effects, including:2

- Inhibition of the uptake of key compounds, such as proteins.
- Interference with DNA production.
- Damage to cell structure.
As a result, ciclopirox kills fungi and prevents them from growing.
Will I get side effects using Ciclopirox?

How does Ciclopirox compare with ketoconazole?
Ciclopirox and ketoconazole are two effective and well-tolerated antifungal treatments for scalp ringworm. When compared for seborrheic dermatitis (the mildest form of which is dandruff), patients reported that ciclopirox improved symptoms better than ketoconazole.3
But this may not be an accurate representation of how well they work for ringworm, as different conditions can respond differently to the same treatment.
