What is Ciclopirox?
Ciclopirox is an antifungal shampoo that treats scalp ringworm, a fungal skin infection that’s characterized by red, circular patches. These patches can be itchy, swollen, and scaly.1
Ringworm isn’t a serious condition, but it’s highly contagious, so it’s important to treat it right away. Scalp ringworm is often treated with an antifungal shampoo like Ciclopirox. Only in serious cases will your doctor prescribe oral antifungals.
Ciclopirox is prescribed off-label for ringworm. But this simply means that this condition is not specifically mentioned on the label. There’s plenty of evidence that it works for fungal infections like ringworm.
How does Ciclopirox work?
Ciclopirox works by binding to iron, which inhibits iron-dependent enzymes that fungi need to function. This leads to several effects, including:2
- Disruption of energy production.
- Inhibition of the uptake of key compounds, such as proteins.
- Interference with DNA production.
- Damage to cell structure.
As a result, ciclopirox kills fungi and prevents them from growing.
Will I get side effects using Ciclopirox?
There’s a chance of experiencing side effects when using Ciclopirox. Some people might notice itching or a burning sensation right after applying, but these shouldn’t last long. If you notice the side effects persist or symptoms worsen, contact your doctor right away.
How does Ciclopirox compare with ketoconazole?
Ciclopirox and ketoconazole are two effective and well-tolerated antifungal treatments for scalp ringworm. When compared for seborrheic dermatitis (the mildest form of which is dandruff), patients reported that ciclopirox improved symptoms better than ketoconazole.3
But this may not be an accurate representation of how well they work for ringworm, as different conditions can respond differently to the same treatment.
Typically, oral antifungal medications are preferred as primary treatments for scalp ringworm, with shampoos like ciclopirox and ketoconazole used alongside to help prevent the spread of the infection.
What forms of Ciclopirox are there?
Ciclopirox usually comes in two forms: a nail lacquer or shampoo. The lacquer is typically used to treat fungal nails, while the shampoo helps treat ringworm on the scalp.
What doses of Ciclopirox are there?
Ciclopirox shampoo comes in a 1% dose. It’s applied to the affected areas twice daily for up to four weeks.
