Azelastine is an antihistamine that helps relieve symptoms of a nasal infection.
Bacteria and viruses are both common causes of nasal infections. In response to these infections, your body releases histamine, but this triggers symptoms like nasal congestion and a runny nose.
Azelastine works by blocking histamine receptors in your nose, which helps stop these symptoms from happening.
How does Azelastine work?
Azelastine is an antihistamine that binds to histamine receptors in your nose. Histamine is a chemical that’s released when your body detects an allergen like pollen or a foreign invader like bacteria. While histamines are part of your body’s defence system, they can also cause symptoms like nasal congestion and sneezing.
By binding to histamine receptors, Azelastine blocks histamine from attaching to them, alleviating nasal symptoms.[1]
What doses of Azelastine are there?
Azelastine is only available in two strengths: 0.05% and 0.1%. Your doctor will typically prescribe the lower dose initially, but it can depend on the severity of your symptoms. Your doctor will give you more information on when and how to use it for your specific needs.

Azelastine: FAQ
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Will I get side effects using Azelastine?
Answer:
Some people may experience side effects when using Azelastine, such as:
An unpleasant taste in your mouth
Nausea
Nose irritation
The side effects should go away when you stop using the medication. If you're worried about any side effects, let your doctor know.
You can see the full list of side effects in the package leaflet that comes with the medicine.
Can I get Azelastine over the counter?
Answer:
No, you need a prescription for Azelastine. Your doctor will check it's suitable for you before prescribing it.
You can, however, get Astepro Allergy (the branded version of Azelastine), without a prescription at most pharmacies.
How does Azelastine compare with Flonase?
Answer:
Azelastine and Flonase are both nasal sprays for nasal infections and allergies, but they contain different active ingredients and work in different ways:
Azelastine is an antihistamine that blocks histamine.
Flonase (fluticasone) is a nasal corticosteroid that reduces swelling.
While these medications are often used individually, they can be combined too. One study found that azelastine and fluticasone were more effective together than either drug alone. [1]
Is Azelastine similar to any other medication?
Answer:
Astepro Allergy is the branded version of Azelastine. They both contain the same active ingredient but in different concentrations: Astepro is available in 0.1% and 0.15% and Azelastine is available in 0.05% and 0.1%. Because of these differences in dose, you might find one to be more or less effective than the other.
Aside from the concentrations, they also differ in non-active (excipient) ingredients, who they’re made by, and how much they cost (generic medications tend to be cheaper). The one you choose, though, is completely up to you.
