Lotrimin is an antifungal cream that can help treat athlete’s foot within a week. Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a fungal skin infection that causes itchiness, redness, and scaling between and around the toes. It’s a contagious condition that should be treated quickly to avoid spreading it to others and other areas of your body like your toenails.
Athlete’s foot is treated with antifungal cream, such as Lotrimin, but in some cases, you might need antifungal tablets.
Clotrimazole, the active ingredient in Lotrimin, is an antifungal. It works by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, the key component of the fungal cell wall. Without it, the fungus can’t survive, ultimately leading to its death.[1]
Lotrimin comes in many forms, including creams, sprays, and powders. They all contain the same antifungal in similar concentrations; the main difference is how you apply them. At Treated, we only have Lotrimin AF.
Yes, there’s a generic version of Lotrimin that goes by the name of the antifungal it contains: Clotrimazole. Both come as a cream in the same concentration. The key differences are the packaging, non-active (excipient) ingredients, and the price – usually generic medications are cheaper than branded ones.
Lotrimin comes in one dose containing 1% clotrimazole. You typically apply it twice a day for up to four weeks. If your symptoms don’t improve, your doctor might recommend using another treatment.
