Griseofulvin is an oral antifungal tablet that prevents the growth and spread of the fungus that can cause athlete’s foot. It’s usually not a first-line treatment for athlete’s foot, and is typically prescribed if topical treatments haven’t worked – or if your case is particularly persistent.
Griseofulvin works by stopping the growth and spread of the fungus responsible for athlete’s foot. It doesn’t kill the fungus directly, but interferes with the mitosis of the fungus – the process by which it splits, multiplies, and spreads.[1]
Griseofulvin is available in two doses, 125 mg tablets, and 500 mg tablets. It’s usually the 500 mg tablet that you’ll be prescribed to clear up athlete’s foot infections.
Griseofulvin is a generic medicine. This means it’s named after its active ingredient: griseofulvin.

You should always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions when using Griseofulvin. For athlete’s foot, you’ll usually take 500 mg (one tablet) per day. You can use Griseofulvin alongside another topical antifungal treatment, too.[1]
