Fluconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal medicine that can be used to treat athlete’s foot. It’s usually prescribed for more severe or persistent cases of athlete’s foot, or if topical treatments haven’t worked.
It’s used off-label for athlete’s foot, which means that it can be prescribed by your doctor if they think it’s the right treatment for you.
Fluconazole targets a specific enzyme in the fungus that can cause athlete’s foot. It interferes with this enzyme, stopping it from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is critical in the structure of the fungi’s cell membrane. This disrupts the fungi’s cell membrane, killing it off and stopping it from spreading.[1]
Fluconazole capsules are available in 50 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg dosages. But typically, the 150 mg dose is prescribed for athlete’s foot, and this is the only dose available with us.
Fluconazole is a generic medicine that’s named after its active ingredient: fluconazole. It’s a broad-spectrum antifungal medicine that’s effective against a variety of different fungal infections, like yeasts (including Candida and Malassezia), and dermatophytes (which are responsible for tinea infections).
